Beach holidays could be closer to you than you think as TripAdvisor unveils the top 10 best beaches in the UK. The results were part of the annual TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. The award-winners were determined based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on TripAdvisor gathered over a 12-month period. From Cornwall to Scotland, the best beaches can be found up and down the country – here are the top 10.

1. Bournemouth Beach, Bournemouth, Dorset

Bournemouth Beach has won the UK’s best beaches for the second year running, holding onto the title after climbing an impressive six places from 2017 to be named UK’s number one in 2018 and now again in 2019.

The Dorset beach also celebrates the title of sixth best-rated in Europe and 20th in the world.

2. Luskentyre, Isle of Harris, Scotland

Second place in the UK this year goes to Scotland’s Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris, which also comes in 12th in Europe, climbing four places from 16th last year.

3. St. Brelade’s Bay Beach, St Brelade, Jersey

Although not actually in the UK, Jersey is still in the British Isles and was included by TripAdvisor in its results. St. Brelade’s Bay Beach was voted “Excellent” by 84 per cent of TripAdvisor reviewers.

It boasts family-friendly activities and watersports, beach cafes and seaside restaurants, beach walks and plenty of sunbathing spots.

4. Woolacombe Beach, Woolacombe, Devon

Woolacombe Beach has been awarded five out of five stars by TripAdvisor. The spot benefits from a three-mile-long stretch of golden sand.

According to the Devon tourist board, the beach “is fast becoming renowned as an international surfing hotspot.”

Ranked as “Excellent” by 86 per cent of TripAdvisor Reviewers, Barafundle Beach is home to golden sand and crystal clear waters.

According to the National Trust: “Barafundle Bay has its fair share of romantic charm with its secluded location. Only accessible on foot, it has the air of an undiscovered gem.”

6. Filey Beach, Yorkshire

Filey Beach has five miles of golden sands. It is lined with a historical promenade with a sculpture trail and beach chalets.

Sailing lessons and pony rides are also on offer at the beach, making it ideal for families.

7. Rhossili Bay, Rhossili, Wales

Rhossili Bay boasts three miles of golden sand, two of which are owned by the National Trust.

The spot is perfect for walkers, as there are routes available in all directions with excellent views. It’s also good for watersports.

8. Gorleston Beach, Norfolk

Gorleston Beach is two miles long and is three miles from the centre of Great Yarmouth.

It’s popular with young families, surfers, body-boarders and kite-flyers.

9. Perranporth Beach, Perranporth, Cornwall

Voted “Excellent” by 81 per cent of TripAdvisor reviewers, Perranporth Beach is nearly two miles long.

According to Visit Cornwall: “Because the beach is so huge, it almost feels as if you have the place to yourself and the fresh air off the ocean is exhilarating.”

The extensive sand dunes are home to butterflies and lizards and there’s a beach cafe which serves drinks and snacks.

10. Newborough Beach, Dwyran, Anglesey, Wales

Newborough Beach “stretches for miles; miles of golden sand, sand dunes and stunning views,” according to Go North Wales.

“The beach runs along the majestic Newborough Forrest, which adds to the spectacle of this beautiful beach,” said the tourist board. It scored five out of five stars on TripAdvisor.

If you’re looking to leave the UK and head to mainland Europe, the continent’s best secret beaches have been revealed. 

The shortlist, from the Telegraph, is chosen from beaches in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Croatia, Greece and Turkey.
