What is the situation with Wizz Air flights at Luton Airport?

Wizz Air flights could have beem severely “disrupted” as baggage handlers and check in staff planned go on strike at the airport.

Industrial action was been planned by GH London Ground Handling Services employees.

The spate of strikes was set to run between 6pm on March 3rd until 5:59pm on March 10th 2019, meaning hundreds of passengers and approximately 42 flight routes would be affected.

A spokesperson for Luton Airport confirmed to Express.co.uk on Friday the planned strikes had been suspended.

What have Wizz Air said about the situation?

A spokesperson for Wizz Air told Express.co.uk prior to the strike cancellation: “Wizz Air has been advised of planned strike action by GH London Ground Handling Services employees due to take place between 6pm on March 3rd until 5:59pm on March 10th 2019.

“Should the strike go ahead, Wizz Air flights from London Luton Airport may be disrupted.

“Whilst this planned strike is beyond our control, we will work hard to ensure that we minimise the impact on our customers.

“We strongly recommend that all customers flying from London Luton between the above dates check the Flight Status feature on our app or website for real time information.

“Wizz Air sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by this regrettable strike action by GH London Ground Handling Services employees.”

What have Wizz Air passengers said about the strikes?

Worried travellers have taken to social media site Twitter to express concern at their plans potentially being disrupted.

One asked the airline if their flight would be cancelled, or delayed.

A spokesperson for Wizz Air replied: “Hey there, currently we do not have any confirmation if our flights will be affected and if we receive any updates, we will send you email/mobile message notification with further instructions.”

To another worried traveller, they added: “This (the travel alert) would happen in a timely manner, so you know before going there.”

Have Wizz Air flights suffered disruption before?

In 2018, the budget brand was found to be the most delayed airline in the UK.

It was revealed by figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which was compiled by the Press Association.

They analysed 44 airlines and 2,000 scheduled flights, with cancelled flights not included in the study.

Delays of 23 minutes on average were found for the Hungarian carrier in 2017.
